Teacher for gifted kids caught raping middle school boy in bathroom

A Math teacher who taught gifted middle school students in Brooklyn was arrested on Wednesday
and charged with sexually abusing a boy at the Brooklyn middle school where he worked.
Andre Braddy, 34, was arrested at Lenox Academy - a magnet school for talented middle schoolers -
in Canarsie, Brooklyn. It is alleged that the Math teacher had sex with a 15-year-old boy inside the
school's bathroom. This went on for at least a month. He allegedly had sex with the teen three times
and sent him lewd pictures.
The boy reportedly told one of his parents about the encounters with the teacher, and the police were
called, leading to Braddy's arrest last Wednesday evening.
In a statement, Douglas Cohen, a spokesman for the city Department of Education, said: "These
deeply disturbing allegations have no place in our schools."
Braddy has been suspended with pay and will not be allowed contact with students if he is released
on bail. Douglas Cohen added that Mr. Braddy was immediately removed from the school and "will
remain away from students pending the outcome of the investigation and we will pursue his removal
from payroll as soon as legally possible."
Braddy was arraigned in Brooklyn Thursday night on charges of criminal sexual act, sexual
misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child. He is accused of having nonconsensual anal and
oral sex with the 15-year-old student at the school on three occasions between March 19 an April 20,
according to the complaint, which was made public after the arraignment.
Braddy also allegedly sent the boy photos of his genitals and anus, the complaint says.
According to police, they have text messages as evidence of the encounters between 34-year-old
Andre Braddy and the male student. Police are investigating if there are any other victims.
Braddy was an eighth-grade mathematics and advanced algebra teacher at the Lenox Academy, PS
235, in Canarsie since September 2015. He was awarded a $100,000 fellowship to earn his Master's
degree while he was teaching.
The 34-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him and bail was set at $75,000
bond or $25,000 cash. He is due back in court May 1.
